Reflective Practice and Visual Language.

"The Reflective Practitioner"

Donald Schon

In our first week of the seminar, we talk about reflective practices and visual languages. Reflective practice may be defined as the capacity to reflect on action so as to engage in a process of continious learning. There are two types of reflective practices which are “Reflective In Action” and “Reflective On Action”. Reflect is concerned with consciously looking at and thinking about our experiences, actions and responses and then interpreting/analsing them in order to learn from them. Visual Language could be defined as a system of communication visual elements. There are different ways of visualizing a picture such as – Imagination, Perception and Visual Thinking. Its a way of interpreting either a “Text” or a “Picture” the way its been seen.

We look at two different theories by Donald Schon which were!Reflective In Action” and “Reflection On Action” respectively. Reflection In Action-is concerned with practicing critically. so a physiotherapy student working with a client on an exercise programme is making decisions about the situability of particular excerses, which exerses, which exercise to do next and judging the success of each exercise at the same time as they are conductiong the activity. While on the other hand, “Reflection On Action” – Occurs after the activity has taken place when you are thinking about what you (and others) did, judging how successful you were and whether any changes to what you did could have resulted in different outcomes.

In my opinion i would say the two reflections are very important in any piece of work in which an individual is making in the process or has made and he/she is going bhack for a review because by using the reflections approiratly and individual would find it hard mistakes again and take decisions/solutions while the work is in the process.

According to David Boud, Rosemary Keogn and David Walker, eds. Reflection: Turning Experience Into Learning (New York: Kogan page Ltd) at 19 states that” Reflection in the context of learning is a generic term for those intellectual and affective activities in which individuals engage to explore their experiences in order to lead to new understandings and approach. It may take place in !Isolation” or “Association” with others.
